In the beginning of the game you are given a trading/exploration ship and a small group of colonists. The game begins with the European discovery of the Americas (1500) and continues until approximately the time of the American You face many of the same challenges that faced colonial organizers of the time-competitionįrom other Old World powers, strange native cultures, the problems of establishing profitable trade programs, and the problems of organizing an army from a rag-tag band of colonists. You are sent by your King and country to establish colonies in the newly-discovered Americas that lie to the west. Sid Meier's Colonization is a strategy game which puts you in the role of Viceroy of the New World. Otherwise, the game's visual and audio elements are solid. It takes a lot of switching back and forth sometimes to get colonists in the right jobs and the roads between your settlements are nearly invisible. There are a few downsides, unfortunately. Summary screens provide all the detail you need to manage the big picture, while simple yield displays let you see what each and every settlement needs at any given moment. The interface is very clean and presents the game in way that makes it very easy to maintain awareness of what's going on around you. The new version lets you assign an import or export tag as well as stock limits to every single good in every single settlement.

The greatest addition of this part is the automation of trade. A wide range of multiplayer options are also included and, given that a game of Colonization is substantially shorter than Civilization, it's much easier to get in and get your fix. Military units have a whole list of possible promotions now, so you can reward and strengthen units that succeed in combat.

The atmosphere differs from the simplistic growing crops to the war battles.
